Hi Again,
It would depend on from where you travel in Hokkaido.
The JR East Pass would only cover your travel from Aomori to Yamagata.
In comparison a ticket Sapporo - Yamagata is ¥ 18,660
and Hakodate - Yamagata - ¥ 14,960
