13 days in Japan - 7 day JR pass

Quick question: could I, and should I use the JR pass to get to Mount Fuji? It depends where around Fuji you wish to travel. There are different approaches to Fuji and different places to visit. The JR Pass generally will take you most of the way, however it could be that you'll have to use other transport as well. For instance, if you travel to Kawaguchiko (One of the Fuji 5 lakes) then the JR Pass will get you to Otsuki station from where the last part to Kawaguchiko is traveled on the (non JR) Fujikyu line, which requires a normal ticket.

I'm considering a day trip to either Kamakura or Nikko. Which one do you recommend? Personally I would prefer Nikko, as it offers more to see and visit. Kamakura is easier to travel to though and would be better suited if you wish to make a quick trip. Nikko requires a full day.

Takayama is actually pretty big and you don't have to worry about not speaking Japanese.

Visiting Koya will also take up a good amount of time, so reserve your day for it. The Heritage ticket can offer good value if you use it to visit attractions and temples around Koya as well. Using the JR would add extra travel time, which may not be the best option if it is a day trip.

Himeji is almost done! Right now there is still scaffolding going on, however much of the castle is visible again and I think it is worth visiting. There's also an observation deck where you can see the progress of the restoration. Which in itself is nice visiting.

Another question: is it necessary and important to reserve tickets? What are the chances the seats are full and I have to wait for the next train?
