Should I get a JR Pass for my 6 days trip?

Hi all! My partner and I are visiting Japan for 6 days. We are flying in to Osaka on Day 1 and planning on going to Nara and possibly Kyoto on Day 2. We have booked the hotel for Tokyo from Day 3 to Day 6 and could be spending 1 day in Nagoya. Will it be worth it to get a JR Pass?

Day 1 - Osaka
Day 2 - Nara & Kyoto
Day 3 - Tokyo
Day 4 - Nagoya?
Day 5 - Tokyo
Day 6 - Depart from Osaka

If it's not worth it, can anyone please advice on how to get around?

Thank you!

Hi there,

A 7 day JR Pass would suit your travel very well. You can use it to cover all your planned travel, including your travel to and from the Airport.

The 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as your return Osaka - Tokyo, so any additional travel you may do is free (Nagoya, Kyoto, Nara and to the Airport).

I hope this helps!

Hi Daniel-san, thanks for your advice. I'm still contemplating if I should get the JR pass because apparently return flight ticket from Osaka to Tokyo is only AU$121 (AU$69 one way) and flight duration is only 1.5hours. Should I go for it and purchase tickets separately when I travel between Osaka-Kyoto-Nagoya? (We've taken out Nara) We're on a budget but if it's cheaper and more convenient to travel with a JR pass then we'll go for it!

Hi again,

That's a good point! Airfares can sometimes be cheaper when you book them in advance and under certain conditions. My I am not very familiar with AUD but I guess from a quick exchange rate check that your flight will be around ¥12,000 a return Osaka - Nagoya is ¥12,760. You will probably break even with a JR Pass with traveling to Kyoto and the Airport.

In other words I guess the choice comes down to personal preference between flying and taking the train.
Travel time on the Shinkansen between Tokyo - Osaka is slightly under 3 hours but I think this is about the same with check-in and luggage collection at the airport, not to forget the travel time to and from the Airport. With the Shinkansen you can go to the station 15minutes in advance reserve your tickets and be on your way. Personally I think taking the train would be less of a hassle than taking a domestic flight and planning train tickets around it.

Of course I love traveling by train, so sorry if my advice feels a little partial :)
Daniel
