Say we plan to travel April 2014, can we already purchase the JR 7 Day Pass as early as now? How long before the voucher expires - 1 year? We know that once activated, it must be used within 7 consecutive days. We read somewhere that this 7-day ticket will be phased out and will be replaced by a 5 day flexible pass good for 14 days. We prefer the 7 day consecutive pass though.

Hi there,
The JR Pass Voucher is valid for 90 days after purchase. You can select up to 30 days in advance once you activate your JR Pass in Japan.
About the 7 day / 5 day JR passes. I think you mixed up the nation wide (normal) JR Pass with the JR East Pass. This last regional pass has been undergoing some changes but the 7 day nationwide pass is here to stay!
