I purchased the Hokkaido JR pass and was planning to take a round-trip on the Hokuto Limited Express between Sapporo and Hakodate. Do I need to reserve seats to ride? I am finding mixed advice when I search online. Some say I don't, and other sources say there are no unreserved seats on the Hokuto Limited Express.

Yes, please make a seat reservation for the Hokuto Limited Express.
The official website states:
"All seats on the Ltd. Exp. Hokuto, Ltd. Exp. Suzuran, Ltd. Exp. Ozora, and Ltd. Exp. Tokachi are reserved. There are no non-reserved seats on the trains above. Please make sure to receive a reserved seat ticket before boarding. (Seat reservation cannot be made on the train.)"
