Hi,

We are 6 adults and 2 children, 5 and 8 years old. Traveling from Tokyo to Mt. Fuji then to Kyoto and Osaka then back to Tokyo with 8 days in mid April. Would the 7 day JR pass be suitable to use for this itinery?

I have read through post of the post, I believe if we use 7 day JR pass, we can go from the Airport to our hotel in Tokyo too.

Can you advise?

Thanks

Hi there,

Yes, the JR-Pass would be a good option for your plans, a 7-day JR-Pass is roughly the same price as a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto, any extra travel you do after that basically is free. You can use the JR-Pass to travel from the Airport to the Heart of Tokyo, let me know where you can staying and I can find the best route for you! It also covers the train between Kyoto and Osaka.

I also would like to point out your child does not need a JR-Pass if he/she is below 6 at the time of travel, for more information read our blog article about traveling with children.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel

7 day JR Pass is good but if we stay in Tokyo for another 2 days, what is good option for us to travel around Tokyo. Is there a one day pass that covers all transport or route in Tokyo?

Hi Again,

In Tokyo the best way to get around is the Tokyo Metro System. You can buy a ticket that allows for unlimited travel on the Tokyo Metro for just 710 Yen on a single day.

You may also find this list useful with other train tickets/ day passes in Tokyo.

Have a great time in Japan!

Hi Daniel

I am also trying to find a way to travel from Toyko to Mt Fuji and then from Mt Fuji straight to Osaka or Kyoto without going back to Tokyo. I do searches on google map and it keeps saying that I have to go back to Tokyo in order to travel to Osaka or Kyoto. So can you advise on the below?

  1. We only plan to stop at Mt Fuji probably half a day or a day, hoping to visit Mt Fuji 5th Station, Gotemba Peace Park and then touring around Hakone from Togendai to Owakundani. I suppose we have to use the local buses and diffrent fares to do this? Then we go straight to our hotel in Osaka in the same day.

  2. Would 7 day JR pass be usefull to travel around when we are in Osaka and Kyoto or we have to buy diffent fare to go around in these cities?

  3. Is Toyota Kaikan Museum on the way back from Kyoto to Tokyo?

Thanks very much.

Hi again and welcome back!

1.) The best way to visit Fuji is indeed via Tokyo and it can be hard to go directly from there to either Osaka or Kyoto, the places you are planning to visit there are all part of the Hakone Area.
What I recommend is getting a Hakone Free Pass that you can use to travel on almost every kind of transport in the area and it is very easy to make good savings with. Once you are done sightseeing in Hakone I would recommend traveling to the station called Odawara with the Hakone Free Pass and from there take the Bullet Train with the JR-Pass to Osaka.

2.) You can the JR-Pass to travel between Osaka and Kyoto and on local trains in Osaka with the JR-Pass. Other kinds of transportation like the metro in Osaka unfortunately are not covered. For Kyoto I would recommend an all day bus pass that is only 500Yen.

3.) You can reach Toyota Kaikan Museum from Nagoya in 1.5hours. Nagoya is on the route between Kyoto and Tokyo but the 1.5 hours would be extra travel time. Also refer to the access page from the museum.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel

I am placing an order to buy JR Pass on this website and it asks for the date that I start using it. If says, I put the 18th April and activate the pass on 19th or 20th April, would I lose one day?

Thanks

Hi Huyen Pam,

The date on the website only serves as indication. You can activate the pass within 90 days of purchase and make fully use of it for 7 days. So you are completely fine!

Thank you ordering with us,
Daniel
