Would it be worthwhile to purchase 7-day JR Pass

HI Mari,

I am not sure if JR Pass is worth it if I were to travel in the following path:

Day 1 Fukuoka
Day 2 Kumamoto >> Nagasaki >> Fukuoka
Day 3 Fukuoka >> Miyajima >> Hiroshima
Day 4 Hiroshima >> Himeji >> Kyoto
Day 5 Kyoto
Day 6 Kyoto
Day 7 Kyoto >> Tokyo
Day 8 Tokyo >> Kyoto
Day 9 Kyoto >> Osaka

I plan to get 7 day pass. But not sure if I should start it on Day 1 or should I activiate it on Day 3 when I cross from Kyushu to Honshu :)

Your kind advise is most appreciated!

  1. Hakata > Kumamoto: ¥4,990 (35mins, 118km)
  2. Kumamoto > Nagasaki(nagasaki): ¥7,370 (124mins, 212km)
  3. Nagasaki(nagasaki) > Hakata: ¥4,380 (112mins, 153km)
  4. Hakata > Miyajimaguchi: ¥8,810 (108mins, 302km)
  5. Miyajimaguchi > Hiroshima: ¥400 (28mins, 21km)
  6. Hiroshima > Himeji: ¥8,270 (63mins, 249km)
  7. Himeji > Kyoto: ¥2,210 (91mins, 130km)
  8. Kyoto > Tokyo: ¥13,420 (161mins, 513km)
  9. Tokyo > Kyoto: ¥13,420 (164mins, 513km)
  10. Kyoto > Osaka: ¥540 (28mins, 42km)

JR ticket cost: ¥63,810 for 10 legs

As you can see you'll actually make good savings on your travel even with a 14 day rail pass!

Looking at the prices of your travel I think you should use a 7 day pass and activate it from day 2-8 This will cover all of your expensive travel, and while you will have to pay for travel on day 9 (Kyoto-Osaka) this is not going to break the bank.
