Will I be able to maximize the 7-Day JRP with this itinerary?

Hi there!

My husband and I will be in Japan for 11 days from late March to the 1st week of April and will be based in Tokyo. In between, we're planning to travel to Kansai where we'll be based in Osaka for 5 nights.

I mapped out a Kansai area itinerary and I was wondering if everything sounds good? We've already been to some of the more popular touristy sites in Kyoto and Kobe so this time around we want a relaxed sightseeing pace (while making the most of the JR Pass!). Here it is:

  1. Tokyo to Osaka via Shinkansen
  2. Osaka to Takarazuka / Takarazuka to Nara / Nara back to Osaka
  3. Osaka to Kyoto (Fushimi Inari, Kinkakuj) and back.
  4. (Day 4 will be devoted to Osaka sights - Natl. Museum of Art, Dotonburi, Shinbaishi)
  5. Osaka to Tokyo via Shinkansen
  6. Tokyo to Yokohama (Ramen Museum)

Any comments / suggestions / expert advice will be very much appreciated. :)

Hi Hana,

So far I think your itinerary looks great! I think you will be able to get a great feel of Osaka especially.
While you are there consider a visit to the Umeda Sky Building for a great Sky Line view of Osaka, its especially romantic during the night. I would also recommend a visit to Shinsaibashi around/after dinner time. Around this time the area is very busy but at the same time the atmosphere is a its best!

Did you know that besides the Ramen Museum there is also a Cup Noodle museum in Yokohama? If you are interested, maybe you can combine them in your visit to Yokohama.

I think your itinerary works really well and I think you are good to go!

Have a great time in Japan!
Daniel

PS: did you have a plan for day 7?

Hello Daniel!

Thank you for your very quick response to my question, I really appreciate it! Thank you for the suggestions too. We will definitely check out Umeda Sky Building + Cup Noodle museum in Yokohama. As for your question, on Day 7 we'll already be back in Tokyo so I'm still not sure where we can use the JR Pass except for the Yamanote line. Unless you have suggestions? We've already gone to Nikko before so if you have other recommendations (preferably "off the beaten path" ones, I'll be happy to consider them! :)

Hi Hana,

Did you like Nikko (I don't mean on Facebook)? I really enjoyed it and think it was one of the better places of Japan for sure. Besides Nikko, Kamakura is a very popular visit from Tokyo but it is very popular.

What have considered Kawagoe it is not too far from Tokyo and it well known by the Japanese but somehow less so by foreign visitors.

If you love hiking and/or would like to add some beautiful nature to your trip, I can really recommend a trip to Mount Takao.

All journeys are covered by the JRPass :)

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel!

Thank you so much for your suggestions -- both Kawagoe and Mount Takao sound wonderful! We'll definitely make time to go to either one (or both) when we go in April.

Yes we enjoyed Nikko in one of our previous trips and hopefully we can go back there another time. We love Japan and so we keep going back to see new places every time. :)

Again, many thanks Daniel, I really appreciate your suggestions and kind advice. Have a wonderful week!

Cheers!
Hana
