Visiting Osaka from Nagoya

Hi,

We are a family of 2 adults + 1 toddler and we are planning to visit Osaka for 3 to 4 days (with a side trip to Nara) from Nagoya. What is the best way to do this?

I’ve looked at the JR Pass Ise Kumano Wakayama Area but I’m not sure which trains I can take and the duration of train travel (from Nagoya to Osaka). What about the Kintetsu Rail Pass? Will this be more applicable for us?

Thanks

Hi there,

Nagoya and Osaka are about 1h apart by Shinkansen and a one way will be 5.000-6.000yen. Generally I would just advice buying normal tickets for this route.

You could also use the Kintsu Rail Pass, it takes a bit longer but costs less than Shinkansen tickets.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel-san.

Actually we purchased the Regional Pass (for Ise Kumano Wakayama) then I realised that it does not cover Shinkansen. It says we can use conventional lines. What does that mean? Which lines exactly can we take? I’m afraid the trip will take too long especially for my 2 year old. If that’s the case, I may just cancel the pass. Will the Kintetsu trains be faster compared to the JR trains?

Thank you.

Hi again,

The normal or conventional lines are the traditional lines that were there before the bullet train. You can use the JR Kansai line using the Ise Kumano Wakayama pass. This route takes about 133 minutes with 1-2 transfers along the way. I've done it myself and it was alright (the view itself is quite nice) but I am not sure how this would be for a 2yo.

Kintetsu takes 159 minutes with 1 transfer alone the way, however the 2nd train is a ltd. extra train and may be a bit more comfortable.

In comparison, the Shinkansen takes 34 minutes and is direct.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
