Hi! We plan to fly from the US to Tokyo Narita on Dec 19. Our son is stationed in Yokosuka, so we plan to use that as our home base. We plan to make some short day trips from there on the train. We also plan to take a one night trip to Kyoto. Here are my questions: 1. Can we use the JR Pass from Narita to Yokosuka? 2. Can we use the pass to go to Kyoto? 3. If we were to go to Kyoto on a Sunday morning and then back on Monday afternoon would all the sites be open on Sunday? 4. Would it be worth it to purchase the 7 day rail pass with this type of itinerary?
Thanks so much!
Travel December 19
Hi there!
I think the JR Pass would work very well for you! Just making the trip to Kyoto will pay for the JR Pass and any additional travel you make basically is free.
1.) Yes the JR Pass covers the complete route from Narita Airport - Yokosuka. To get there take the Narita Express to Tokyo station, here transfer to the JR Yokosuka line and get out at Yokosuka.
2.) Yes the Pass covers the Shinkansen to Kyoto, which takes 140-160 minutes from Tokyo station. Additionally you can also use the JR Pass for local JR lines around Kyoto, to places such as Osaka, Nara and local sightseeing spots such as Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama.
3.) Most major attraction are opened year round, except for public holidays. Kyoto has a lot to offer and could keep you busy for a long time. I think spending an extra day in Kyoto would be a great addition if you could somehow plan it in. Also can give you some more specific recommendation for what to see and do in Kyoto if you tell me your interests.
4.) Certainly! I already touched on this at the beginning, the 7 day JR Pass is roughly the same price as a normal return Tokyo - Kyoto by Shinkansen with the JR Pass you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price! So is easy to make good savings with it!
I hope this helps!
Daniel
Thank you Daniel! We plan to travel to Kyoto from Yokosuka. Will the rail pass cover this and how long does it take to get there? How do I find out when this train runs?
Yes the JR Pass covers the full route between Yokosuka and Kyoto, which takes around 220 Minutes all together.
Hyperdia. I have looked up an example route for you here.
When I look up a route on hyperdia, how do I determine if it is covered by the jrp?
Good question,
I would recommend reading our blog post on how to plan with Hyperdia. I already used the correct parameters in the example route, so you can use that as well and simply change the dates as you wish.
Thanks so much! I'll do that.
