Hey

I am travelling with my partner for a week in Japan. We are splitting the time between Tokyo and Kyoto. Wondering if it is still cheaper/better value to buy a 7 day JR pass for the return to trip to Kyoto and back with possibly a quick trip to Osaka or just looking at buying a return fair? Can the JR pass be used inside Tokyo, from what I gather can you use it to Narita airport?

Thanks

Hi there!

I would certainly recommend a JR Pass for this itinerary. You could use it for your travel to and from Narita Airport, Kyoto and Osaka. In addition the JR Pass is also valid on local trains in both Tokyo, Osaka and around Kyoto.

You would already make some good savings with the following travel, prices listed below are for normal tickets without the JR Pass.

Narita Airport - Tokyo ¥ 2,740
Tokyo - Kyoto ¥ 13,020
Kyoto - Osaka ¥ 540
Osaka - Tokyo ¥ 13,550
Tokyo - Narita Airport ¥ 2,740

For a total of ¥ 32,590 the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300 saving you already ¥ 4,290. You could easily add a day trip or two to really get the most of your JR Pass.

I hope this helps!
Daniel
