Hi there,

Here are some answers for you:

Sleeper cars

Although you can use the JR Pass for free with some sleeper cars up to Aomori (Akebono), or with discount on other sleepers (Hokitosei/Cassiopeia), sleepers are generally hard to book with a Japan Rail Pass as you must book in advance once you have your Japan Rail Pass and there is tough competition for bunks.

In general to travel to Hokkaido I recommend using a high speed bullet train like the Hayabusa to get to Shin-Aomori, taking a stop over there or just over in Hokkaido at Hakodate, and then continuing the journey up into Hokkaido the following day. As Hokkaido does not have any bullet trains, travel once you are on the island can be slower than you are used to on the other islands.

Reserved or non-reserved seating

Both reserved and non-reserved seating are freely available to holders of the Japan Rail Pass. You can find out more on how to reserve a seat in our blog post here.

Hope this helps!
