hi

can i find out if there is any senior citizen discounted rate for use of the JR pass.

our flight into kansai airport is late in at 10.40pm. i understand there are some type of resting areas available and charged at a fee. although we are not on transit but just to use the facility for the night, can we use the paid facility.

Hi Pying,

The JR-Pass itself does not offer any further discount, as it already offers a really good value.
However JR provides extra facilities for senior citizen like priority seats to ease your travels.

You can use the free facilities even after going trough customs, there is a hotel on the airport itself (if budget allows I can personally recommend it). You could also take a bus to Osaka, the last one leaves Terminal 1 at 00:15.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Senior citizen seats, could you explain how this works? what is the age for senior citizens? I'm seventy and have been to Japan six times, was there last November and will be returning to Kyoto and Nara again this November for the Autumn colors, are there any 'senior Citizen' discounts I should be aware of?...thank you...Barrie.

Hi Barry,

All trains that do not have the possibility to reserve seats have Priority seats, these can be found in every train car and are made in an effort to guaranty a seat for the elderly and other people that may need them. You can recognize them by signs like these. There is no real age requirement for them.

Some attractions may offer a small discount but it is not common.

Enjoy your stay in Japan!

Hi Daniel,
I will be going to Osaka on the 7th may , arriving on the 8th may. I plan to travel to nearby cities between the 8th to the 15th and on the 16th to 19th in Tokyo. Then back to Osaka again staying on from 19th to 22nd may. In view of this do I need a 2weeks JRL or one week. Thanks.

Hi Jeffrey,

I'd go for the 7 day JR Pass and use it for your travel between Tokyo and Osaka. Local travel is generally pretty cheap so and it is best to use your JR Pass for longer distance travel on the (otherwise pricey) Shinkansen.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Daniel. I need some more advice. I plan to be in Osaka for 3 days (8 to 11), left with 4 days still staying in Osaka but where should I visit on day return places. Also if using 1 week JRP from the 16th to Tokyo, I still have 3 days use of JRP back in Osaka. Where should I go, again baring on mind on day return basis. Thanks.

Regards,
Jeffrey

Hi Jeffrey,

The trip Osaka - Tokyo pretty much pays for the 7 day JR Pass, so any additional travel you may do with it is basically free. For instance you could visit Kyoto / Kobe or Nara from Osaka as a day trip, all make for great visits. If you feel a little more adventures you could hop on the Bullet train and visit Hiroshima.

An other popular visit from Osaka is mount Koya, this area as very beautiful but not covered by the JR Pass so you could visit this outside of your JR Pass period.

Lastly if you would like to try an Onsen, you could head up to historic onsen town of Kinosaki, this is north of Osaka. You can visit it as a day trip although I think that you get the best experience if you also stay for a night in one of the local Ryokan.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
