I'm going to Japan in February '14 with my housemate and 3 year old. We'll be staying at Shimokitazawa for two weeks and mostly staying in Tokyo and surrounds. Considering a day( or 2)trip to Kyoto ( not sure yet).
Would it be worthwhile getting a JR pass for just Narita-Tokyo, travel around Tokyo, Tokyo-Narita? Also I'd like to go on a bullet train at least once, for my sons benefit.
I think Shimokiazawa isn't on any JR lines, will a pass still work on non JR lines?
I'm very confused, any answers would be appreciated :)
Narita-Shimokitazawa- Kyoto(?)-Narita, worth getting a JR pass or east pass?
Hi there!
It really comes down to what you wish to visit with the JR Pass. I would not recommend a JR Pass just for travel locally around Tokyo and to the Airport. However a return Tokyo - Kyoto by bullet train pays of very quickly.
Shimokitazawa is on the Odakyu line which is not included in the JR Pass, the good news is that it is very close to Shinjuku and Shibuya from where you can hop directly on the JR and access the rest Tokyo!
If you do get a JR Pass, consider a stop at Nagoya for the National Railway Museum. This place if amazing if you (or your son) loves trains!
Hope this helps!
Daniel
