Hi! I will be going from Naoshima to Hiroshima and was planning on an overnight stop over in Mijayima.
It seems to be very complicated. Would you suggest going to Mijayima from Hiroshima or skipping the island altogether? Any other suggestion re itinerary?
What are the travel instructions following your advice?
How do I get from Naoshima to Hiroshima?
If Miyajima remains in the itinerary, which is the best way to get there?

Hi there,

What seems complicated to you? It is a pretty easy trip.

Take the ferry from Naoshima to Uno. From there a local train to Okayama and finally the Shinkansen to Hiroshima..e voila!

From Hiroshima it is a 30 minute trip to Miyajima by local JR train and ferry.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Certainly and many thanks! A few more questions: How long will it take me to get from Naoshima to Hiroshima? What is the best connection from Kyoto to Naoshima? Should I take the Hikari or Kodama Shinkasen? The first one is direct to Okayama... Do they differ in cost?
Finally, my complete itinerary is: Tokyo-Kanasawa-Kyoto-Naoshima-Hiroshima-Miyajima-Hakone-and from there to Narita. This will comprise 16 days; I will be arriving in Tokyo in the afternoon. Do you have any suggestion for working this out with he 14 day JR Pass to cover this whole itinerary?
Do I need to reserve seats in advance?

Hi again,

The key will be to use the JR Pass for intercity travel, you would not need it for just travel around Tokyo for the first couple of days. So save it for the last 14 days of your trip.

I don't have to exact number but getting to Hiroshima from Naoshima should be pretty straight forward. 1.) Take the Ferry from Naoshima to Uno, from Uno station take a local train to Okayama and from there to Shinkansen to Hiroshima. I'd think it would be around 2-3 hours. Depending on time you have to wait for transfers.

From Kyoto to Naoshima. This best would be to get on a Hikari Shinkansen to Okayama but you could also go to Shin-Osaka and use the Sakura Shinkansen from there. The best connection will likely depend on what time of day you travel. Then from Okayama, use a local train to Uno station/city and the ferry from there to Naoshima.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

For travel from Miyajima to Hakone, first return to Hiroshima using the JR Ferry and local JR line. At Hiroshima, board the Sakura Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka station. At Shin-Osaka you can use a Hikari or Kodama service to Odawara. The exact timing depends on what time of day you travel.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
