My friends and I will be spending Christmas and New year in Japan but we'll be travelling/stop in 4-5 cities for a total of two weeks. I was wondering if the 7-day pass is worth it and buy one way train ticket from Kyoto to Tokyo.

We have the following itineraries
1) Tokyo = 4 days/3 nights
2) Mt Fuji = 3 days/2 nights
3) Osaka = 3 days/ 2 nights
4) Kinosaki = overnight (driving from Osaka to Kyoto)
5) Kyoto = 5 days and 4 nights
6) Kyoto to Tokyo = overnight stay in Tokyo

We can probably use the tickets while in Tokyo to Mt Fuji. But then I have to buy another one for Mt Fuji to Osaka. There are only several days we will be travelling. If we buy one way ticket instead can we purchase the tickets in advance and reserve our seats? Can we do it while we're still overseas?

Also, what is the best route to get to Mt Fuji (staying in Kawaguchiko) from Tokyo? I saw a lot of routes but im getting confuse what is the best train to get.

Will appreciate your help since this is our first time in Japan.

Hi there,

Spending Christmas and New year in Japan, call me jealous :)

I checked for the best pass, and a 7-day JR Pass could be good if you cover travel to Osaka, Kyoto, Kinosaki and back to Tokyo with it. However, I think this takes 8 days in your trip. So, as it stands, buying tickets as you go would be the best option. As you don't cover enough for a 14-day pass to be cost-effective.

For Kawaguchiko, either take the JR train from Shinjuku to Otsuki station, and transfer there to the Fujikyu line to Kawaguchiko (some trains run direct on this route). Alternatively, there are direct buses from Tokyo, Shinjuku and other locations running to Kawaguchiko.

I hope this helps,
Daniel
