JR Full Moon pass or...

Welcome to the Forum. Looking at your itinerary, I think you are planning a lovely nice trip. You will be in Japan during the Cherry blossom season and the weather in April is very well suited for traveling and sightseeing.

To answer your first question: Yes I think that in your circumstance it is very well worth going for the Green Pass. The greatest advantage is probably that you can travel in quiet with more space and extra luxury. During the Cherry Blossom season more people may be on the move, so it is a good time to use it.

Before your post I had not heard of the JR Full Moon pass, so it took some research to figure out.
In short, it is a pass aimed at married senior couples that together have the combined age of 88 or more. It can only be used for Green class (first class) cars on the JR and can be bought for a period of 5, 7 or 12 days for a price of ¥80,500 / ¥99,900 or ¥124,400 respectively (1 pass is enough for 1 couple). I must say that I really like the idea of this pass and it is available for Japanese couples too.

Compared the the JR-Pass it is still relatively expansive however. Here is a little comparison compared to the JR Green Class Pass. Please note that you have to buy one pass for each person.

7 Days ¥37,800 (or 75.600 for two / 5400 per person, per day) 14 Days ¥61,200 (122.400 for two / 4371 p.p.p.d) 21 Days ¥79,600 (159.200 for two / 3790p.p.p.d.)

For the Full moon pass this is ¥8050 / ¥7135 / ¥5183 p.p.p.d. for 5/7/12 days respectively.

For reference: the normal class rail pass cost
¥28,300/7 Days ¥45,100/14 Days ¥57,700/21 Days

It's a lot of numbers so I hope it is understandable, let me know if it is not clear in anyway.

Looking at your itinerary I have made a little oversight of what would make most sense it terms of value for money:

The first part I looked at was what would be best to cover with the JR-Pass and what options are available.
I would recommend a 14 day JR-Pass for your travel from the 29th of March to the 11th of April. This will cover all of your major traveling and also your journey from Narita Airport to Tokyo. For your local travel in the Kansai Area (Kyoto, Nara, Osaka and Kansai Airport) I would recommend buying single way tickets and use the local trains, they are very reasonable.
Kyoto --> Nara ¥690
Nara --> Osaka ¥ 780
Osaka --> Kansai Airport ¥ 1,060

Here are some additional tips for your itinerary:

Nagano is a very nice place to visit, if you are there for a day the Temple is the place to see first. The Temple consists of 3 areas, you can buy a ticket for the main temple only or the whole complex. From personal experience I think it is certainly worth it to visit all 3 areas. They show some remarkable history and art. Most of the time there is a free English guide available, who is very knowledgeable. If possible I would certainly ask them for a free tour.

When you are in Nagano you can also visit the Matsumoto Area, although you would probably need a day extra for this. The nature there is very beautiful and the Castle and various Onsen are worth a visit as well. You can read more regarding Matsumoto here http://wikitravel.org/en/Matsumoto

Takayama and Kanazawa are wonderful places to visit too, you simple can't go wrong here. My personal recommendation when people visit Kanazawa is always to visit the Castle plus its accompanying gardens and the Geisha district.

After Kanazawa you could consider going to Hiroshima for a day, I would recommend to visit the Peace museum, the memorial park and A-bomb dome. This can all be done in a single day even at a relaxed pace. One of the reasons why I would recommend this, are the impressions that the museum leaves you with, it displays the period of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and the time after. It is hard to describe what happened there but seeing it all in the museum left me unable to talk for some time. Also making this extra stop would mean that you get most out of your JR-Pass.
You could plan this in by staying one day less in Kyoto (6 Nights is still a long time) or visiting Nara in a day trip. Nara is not a very big city so you can easily see it in a day.

7 Nights (or maybe 6) in Kyoto is quite a long time, if you would like to see something else while you are there, consider a day trip to Kobe. There are many things there worth to see and visit, such as it's China town and Sake breweries. Additionally if your JR Pass is till valid a day visit to Himeji to visit the Castle there is a possibility.

You can buy the Full Moon Pass in Japan, I am not aware of any possibility to do so online.

I read somewhere that some pre-sale condition and usage limitations may apply but could not confirm them at this time. I will update this post once I find them.

Hoe grappig dat je in het Nederlands kunt antwoorden. Woon of studeer je in Japan of doe je het van elders?
Graag maken we er gebruik van voor wat meer detailvragen.

Nogmaals dank voor je uitgebreide antwoord en de kostenberekening , helemaal duidelijk. En ook voor je suggesties mbt de route. Omdat ons verblijf in een appartement in Kyoto vastligt in de tijd is de mogelijkheid om te schuiven niet zo groot , maar ik bewaar je suggesties voor uitstapjes vanuit daar hoewel ik denk dat we zullen genieten van Kyoto en ook het in alle rust doorkruisen van die plaats met de fiets . ( Ik loop niet zo makkelijk lang vanwege een versleten knie , dus helaas zijn bergwandelingen, lange voettochten door de stad en Japans eten op de knieën niet mogelijk , maar we gaan het slim aanpakken en gewoon heel veel zien en genieten. )

• vraag: Zijn er altijd taxi's standplaatsen bij een station ? En bij tempels ed? En hebben de parken banken ?

We volgen je advies en gaan binnenkort twee 14 daagse Green Class JR Passes reserveren en de laatste dagen met lokale treinen reizen . Ik heb al gezocht op Hyperdia en de reizen gevonden.
* vraag: Klopt het dat we voor de locale treinen niet een zitplaats hoeven te reserveren ? En hebben die treinen alleen een tweede klas?

• Zou je nog wat verder willen adviseren over de handigste tocht van ons laatste hotel in Osaka naar het vliegveld ? ( Als ik goed heb gespeurd ligt het hotel vlak bij de trein naar het vliegveld Kansai.) Namba Oriental Hotel , Chuo-ku Sennichimae 2-8-17, Osaka , JP

• Zou je ook nog willen aangeven wat de slimste route is naar ons hotel in Tokyo ? Hotel Grand Palace Chiyoda Iidabasshi 1-1-1 Kunnen we bijvoorbeeld lopen vanaf het treinstation Tokyo naar het hotel of is een taxi ( of metro) nodig en kun je dan globaal iets zeggen over de kosten?

Ik ben nu met de feest dagen gewoon hier in Nederland maar begin Januari ga ik weer naar Japan voor studie en werk. Het mooie van internet is dat je dezer dagen dit soort dingen overal ter wereld kan doen.

Kyoto is uitermate geschikt om in rond te fietsen, er zijn niet veel heuvels en alles ligt op redelijke afstand van elkaar.
Hoewel je in Japan aan de linker kant van de weg rijd mag je meestal gewoon op de stoep fietsen en went het snel.
Ook qua taxi's is Japan erg goed voorzien, het is bijna onmogelijk een straat te zien zonder een taxi en het is nooit moeilijk er eentje te vinden. Bij stations is altijd een standplaats en vaak staan er ook enkele taxi's te wachten bij een hotel. Het instap tarief bedraagt meestal 600-700 Yen en is goed voor ongeveer 2km daarna betaal je ongeveer 200 Yen per KM. Elke taxi heeft een soort van boordje bij het raam waarom staat of deze vrij is of niet, als deze rood is, is de taxi vrij en als deze groen is die bezet (dit vond ik zelf een beetje verwarrend in het begin) als het boordje oranje is, is de taxi vrij maar word er een hoger tarief gerekend. Dit is meestal 20-30% en is van toepassing in de nacht.

In de meeste parken zijn veel bankjes te vinden, ook heeft bijna elk park zijn eigen openbaar toilet.

Lokale treinen in Japan hebben inderdaad alleen 2de klasse coupés waarvoor niet gereserveerd kan worden.

Reizen van en naar de hotels:

Het hotel in Osaka ligt erg centraal en vlak bij een aantal stations. Het makkelijkst is om vanaf Namba de Nankai Airport express te nemen. Dit kost 46 Min. en ¥ 890. Zie hier als voorbeeld.

Vanaf Tokyo station is het ongeveer 10minuten met de taxi naar het Hotel. Als jullie veel bagage hebben zou ik dit aanraden, het is ongeveer 3.5 k.m dus het zal rond de 1000 Yen kosten. Het is ook mogelijk om naar Kudanshita of Iidabashi station te reizen met de trein/metro. Maar dan komen er als snel 2 of meer overstappen bij en die zijn vrij moeilijk als u niet zo goed bekent bent met Tokyo. Deze stations zijn wel uitermate geschikt als opstap station voor dagtripjes.

Nog een laatste vraagje: we reizen naar Kansai Airport in de ochtendspits ( 3 uur voor vertrek dus rond 7 uur) . Kun je globaal aangeven wat een taxi zou kosten ? Of zou het meevallen met de drukte?

Een goede reis terug voor jou naar Japan en alvast een heel goed en inspirerend 2013.

Er zijn een paar opties mogelijk:

De trein:
De ochtend spits zou ik proberen te vermijden omdat het dan heel erg druk kan zijn en er soms zelf geen plaats is om te staan. Persoonlijk is dit niet zo'n probleem maar als u niet de hele reis kan staan zou ik dit niet aanraden. Hoewel Namba het begin station is, zou dit mee kunnen vallen.

Een andere optie is om met de taxi naar Tennoji te reizen en daar de limited express Haruka te pakken met een reserved seat naar Kansai Aiport. Het is helaas wel wat duurder ( 2,470 Yen p.p.) maar dan weet u zeker dat u een zitplaats heeft, het is aan te raden een stoel reservering de dag voor vertrek te maken, dit kan bij elke JR balie. Zie hier als voorbeeld voor de reis. De taxi naar Tennoji is rond de 1700Yen. Het grootste voordeel van deze reiswijze is dat u zeker op tijd aankomt op Kansai Airport.

De Bus:

U zou ook de airport limousine bus kunnen nemen, deze vertrekt ook in de buurt van Namba en kost slechts 1000Yen P.p. en doet er ongeveer 50minuten over. Gezien het tijdstip van vertrek is dit misschien de beste optie.

De Taxi:
Als laatste zou ik de taxi links laten liggen, het is moeilijk de prijs te bepalen maar gezien de afstand en tijd zal het al snel 15.000Yen kosten naar Kansai Airport.
