Hi Daniel,

I would like to know how to see the top-up difference when using a JR Pass.

For example, using the Japan Travel by Navitime I checked for a one way ticket from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto on the Hayabusa 19.

The info given is:
JR Pass JPY12,100 4hr 17 min
JPY 11,330 Reserved Seat
JPY 20,200 Green Car
JPY 28,580 Gran Class

If i wanted to take the Gran Class does it mean I top up extra JPY 28,580?

Looking forward to your advice.

Thanks very much.

Hi there,

You can't really upgrade when using the JR Pass - if you do want to use a different class of service, e.g. you have an oridinary pass and want to travel in Green Class, then the basic fare will be covered but not anything else.

For Tokyo - Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto:

Basic fare¥ 12,100
Seat Fee:¥ 28,580

Total:¥ 40,680
The JR Pass would cover the basic fare, but you'd still have to pay ¥ 28,580 to travel in Gran Class. That also applies if you hold a Green Pass.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Adding on to my previous post, can I simply top up the difference for a Gran Class seat ticket at any vending machine or is this option only available at JR counters?

Thanks.
