Can the JR Pass be used freely within the subway network in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka?

I'm a little concerned about the ability to use the pass within the city and I want to make sure I'm really getting my money's worth in this regards.

I plan to be in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto and I understand that the pass can be used to travel within this cities freely. However, I wanted to understand if the pass can be used while I am in each of the cities in their internal subway networks.

This way I'll be saving money/time by using the pass within the cities and then when travelling between cities.

Hi there,

The JR Pass is valid on local JR train in Tokyo, Osaka and around the Kyoto area. Metropolitan subway networks are run by different companies and unfortunately do not accept the JR Pass.

Still you can use the JR Pass to reach most areas within Tokyo and Osaka.
Here is a map of the Tokyo Area and lines covered by the JR Pass and here is the same for Osaka and Kansai.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks for your reply.

Final question. How about using the Sunrise Izumo? Tokyo-Okayama for instance.

Yes that is covered! You can take a Nobi Nobi seat for free with the JR Pass :)

I did it myself twice this year and it truly is a great experience!
