Traveling to Japan for 3 weeks at the end of march.
Was wondering if I should get a Japan rain pass? And if yes, should I get a 2 week or 3 week JR pass?
Here is our itinerary: we will be spending on average 2 to 5 days in each city
Tokyo
Nagoya
Kyoto, from Kyoto doing day trips to Nara, koya and ise and maybe kinosaki
Kanazawa and a day trip to shirakawa
Takayama for spring festival

Here are your broad costs (Excl. a visit to Ise as I wasn't sure exactly where you were thinking of going)
JR ticket cost: ¥51,810 for 9 legs
As you can see you'll make good savings with a 14 day pass so I can certainly recommend this option. Unless you think you'll do more travel I think I recommend the 14 day pass coupled with some 1 or 2 day unlimited metro passes while you are in Tokyo.

We made some changes to our itinerary and would value your opinion. What's your opinion on doing a day trip to mount koya from kyoto? Should we still do a 14 days or a 21 days jr pass? If we get the 14 day pass, should we just activate the pass on the 3rd of April?
Here is our revised itinerary:
March 29 - arrive narita. Hotel near tokyo station
March 29 to April 2 - tokyo. Day trip to Mount Fuji
April 3 - 11- kyoto. day trips to Nara, mount koya and kinosaki
April 12- 14- kanazawa. Day trip to shirakawa
April 14- 16- takayama
April 16-18- tokyo. Hotel near tokyo station
April 18 depart from narita
