Hi

I’m planning to go alone (I’m a woman with a big luggage) to Japan this September.

My Itinerary:

Arrive Narita and stay 3 days in Tokyo (including 1 day trip to Mont Fuji + sightseeing in Tokyo main attractions )
From Narita to Nagoya for 2 days (visit to Toyota plan+ ceramic museum )
Nagoya to Kyoto for 4 days (including 1 day trip to Nara + 1 day trip to Hiroshima+ sightseeing in Kyoto main attraction)
Kyoto to Osaka for 2 days (sightseeing + aquarium +outlet)

Is the JR Rail pass worthwhile ?
Should I buy a complementary pass?

I will appreciate all help :-)

Hi there,

I am currently making a making list of ticket prices for you to see if a JR Pass would be worthwhile but some parts are a little unclear to me.

For instance are you staying in Narita when you go to Nagoya? And after Osaka will you go back to Narita Airport or stay in Osaka for a longer period of time?

I can help you find the best JR Pass if you help me out here :)

Hi, Daniel, Thanks a lot for your help.

Let me see if I can try to clarify :-)

  1. I arrive in Narita and will take a transport to Mercure hotel in Tokyo for 4 nights. I will spend 2 days with sightseeing and 1 day trip to Mont Fuji (sleeping in Tokyo)

2.Osaka: Stay 2 days there and I will need transport to go to Osaka International Airport in the 3 day.

Thanks again

Hi Again,

Thank you for clarifying! Now let's see how things would work out:

Day one:
Narita Airport - Tokyo ¥ 3,140

Day four:
Tokyo - Nagoya ¥ 10,780

Day six
Nagoya - Kyoto ¥ 5,640

Day six - ten
Kyoto - Nara ¥ 1,380 (return)
Kyoto - Hiroshima ¥ 21,980 (return)

Day ten - twelve
Kyoto - Osaka ¥ 540
Osaka - Kansai Airport ¥ 1,160

This all adds up to ¥ 44,620, the 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 45,100, so this option would only pay off if you did some additional travel. However I think some good savings are to be had with the 7 day JR Pass. As you could use it from day 4-11 and use it to cover all your expansive long distance travel.

This would include:

Tokyo - Nagoya ¥ 10,780
Nagoya - Kyoto ¥ 5,640
Kyoto - Hiroshima ¥ 21,980 (return)
Kyoto - Osaka ¥ 540

For a total of ¥ 38,940 the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300 and you would save at least ¥ 10,640! So I think the 7 day JR Pass would be the best option for you, you supplement it with buying local tickets as you go.

Note that I left Fuji out as you can't travel there all the way with the JR Pass, I would suggest reading this article for more information about traveling to Mount Fuji.

I hope this helps!
Daniel

PS: Sorry I wrote day 4-11 for the 7 day JR Pass, this should of course be day 4-10.

Also you may find a [Suica + N'EX package useful] for your travel on the first day to Tokyo.

Hi Daniel!
Thanks a lot!

You came up with really good ideas, specially regarding the Suica card.

Was not so clear the cost to Hiroshima (Is really that high???)

So, let me claify to see if the 7 days still working.

Day one:
Narita Airport - Tokyo

Day two
Tokyo- Mt Fuji- Tokyo

Day tree : Tokyo

Day four:
Tokyo - Nagoya

Day Five: Nagoya ( Toyota tour)

Day six
Nagoya - Kyoto

Day seven - ten
Kyoto – Nara- Kyoto
Kyoto - Hiroshima – Kyoto

Day ten - twelve
Kyoto - Osaka
Osaka - Kansai Airport

Do you still thinking that the 7 days is the best?

:-)

Yes I do think the 7 day JR Pass would be best suited for your plans and be the most economic option, Hiroshima is indeed a little expancive to travel to (basically all Shinkansen are) but that's where the JR Pass comes in handy!

To finish the balance, Nara would be included but Kyoto - Osaka would fall out of the usage period. This would all still result is some nice savings.

Hope this clears things up!
Daniel
