Should we buy the railpass?

Hello, I will be taking a 5 day trip to Japan. It's not enough time, so we want to squeeze in the main areas that were recommended. We will fly into Kansai airport on the 11th of September and take the train directly to Kyoto, giving us the whole of Wednesday. We will be spending our time in Kyoto until the 13th of September. Then we will take the train from Kyoto to Tokyo. We will be in Tokyo until Sunday the 15th. We will also need to get to the Tokyo airport and are interested in potentially taking a train Saturday to see Fuji.

We would like to know if you think the JR railpass evens out with the amount we would spend on otherwise using the metro lines instead of JR within the cities and getting to and from the major areas.

Please let me know asap so that I can decide whether to book the JR pass.

Thank you in advance.

Hi there,

There's no JR Pass that would be economical on this route. For a 7-day JR Pass, a return Tokyo - Kyoto is a minimum. As such buying normal tickets as you go is the best option. You can look at local passes to save some money, such as a day pass for the bus in Kyoto or Tokyo Metro.

Kind regards :)
Daniel
