Hello

We are two over 60s travelling and will be in Japan for just five days. We also only need a few journeys in Japan probably out of peak times.
Narita to Tokyo
Tokyo to Kyoto
Kyoto back to Tokyo
Tokyo out to Narita

Is it worth my while to buy a JR pass at about £220 each?

Hi there,

A 7 day JR Pass becomes worthwhile if you spend over ¥28,300 on JR travel. Lets take a look at your ticketed travel costs:

  1. Narita airport terminal 1 > Tokyo: ¥3,140 (62mins, 79km)
  2. Tokyo > Kyoto: ¥13,420 (164mins, 513km)
  3. Kyoto > Tokyo: ¥13,420 (161mins, 513km)
  4. Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥3,140 (58mins, 79km)

JR ticket cost: ¥33,120 for 4 legs

As you can see you'll make good savings with a 7 day pass of ¥4820. In addition to this, any further JR travel you do will be free (eg, using the JR lines in Tokyo, or for a day trip to Nara or Nikko). The savings and flexiblity, combined with the ease of use means that I can recommend the 7 day JR Pass for your travel.

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders through our video blog.

Hope this helps!
