Questions about my Itinerary and the JR pass

Hello there!

So happy Japan has opened back up! It will be my first time travelling there and I'm super excited.

Arrive on Nov. 5th - Depart the 20th

looking for some clarity on the JR Pass, specifically for my itinerary (suggestions and advice more than welcomed)

Fly into Narita Nov. 5th - Train into Tokyo (staying in Shibuya for two nights)

Train from Tokyo to Odawara to Stay in Hakone for 2 nights.

Odawara to Kyoto (Kyoto for 4-5nights)

Kyoto to Osaka (Osaka for 2/3 nights)

Osaka to Nara (Nara for 1 night)

Nara to Tokyo (Tokyo for the remaining nights)

Tokyo to Narita (fly home)

I've been told I should get the 14 day JR pass. a couple questions:

  • Does the pass cover majority of the trains I'll be taking? From my research looks like it will cover most but not all.
  • Is the Train from the airport covered (NEX train?)
  • Because I'm staying in Kyoto for a bit longer than other places, should I consider the Kansai transit pass?
  • Thoughts on itinerary?
  • Was considering adding Tottori to my Itinerary, is that feasible and where would be the best place to slot Tottori in?
  • Do I need to pre-book / reserve seats in advance to taking any of these trains, or am I okay to just show up at the station and go?

Any other advice / suggestions are greatly appreciated before I make the purchase.

Thank you in advance.

Hi there,

We're all super stoked about Japan's reopening! It is amazing to see travel come back.

The JR Pass covers travel between all the cities and stations you plan to visit. Though locally, you still may need some additional travel, such as around Hakone. This also includes travel to/from the airport on the NEX.

Any Kansai Pass depends on what you use it for. I can't say for sure, but they do pay of quickly if you intend to make a couple day trips.

I think it is a very well-balanced itinerary, and great for a first time visit to Japan. You get to see a lot, but don't have to hurry much.

Totorri is certainly worth a visit too, I like adding it as it is less of a classical destination in Japan and a bit more of the beating path. You'd also make fantastic use of the JR Pass getting there. The best way to do so would certainly be from the Kansai area. It would be possible as a day trip, but travel time is significant. I think you'd enjoy it more if you stayed a night less in Osaka and booked a nice Ryokan in Tottori.

You can get on all these trains as you like, though I'd still recommend getting seat reservations. This way your seating is secured and since the JR Staff book your tickets, you will always be on the right and best train (connection).

As a final tip, I'd recommend getting a Hakone Pass as well if you intend to do the Hakone Circle. Well worth the money and very impressive views all way around.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
