Hi there
Could someone please tell me if this this itinerary is worth purchasing the JR Pass for the following locations..
8th August Narita Airport to Tokyo
12th August Tokyo to Kyoto
15th August Kyoto to Osaka
18th August Osaka to Tokyo
Also was possibly going to add a day trip to Mt Fuji from Tokyo and a day trip from Osaka to Hiroshima

does anyone have any tips to reserve seats as I'm concerned being obon week we will miss out if we wait to book them when we arrive on the 8th August being a big holiday? I was hoping to be able to book them up to 30days of arriving in the country..

Hi there,

If you plan on adding the Fuji and Hiroshima day trip (mainly Hiroshima) it is likely to be worth purchasing the JR Pass. I would suggest purchasing a 7-day pass to use from the 11th/12th to 18th/19th and purchase the trip from Narita to Tokyo separately as it will be significantly cheaper compared to the expense of the other train journeys you'll be making.

Unfortunately you cannot make reservations with the JR Pass until you have activated the exchange order for the pass. My suggestion would be to activate the pass as soon as you arrive at the Narita Airport Station, and have the activation date be set to the 12th (or whenever you go to Kyoto), and as soon as you do that you'll be able to start making reservations for the period that the pass will be valid for. This allows you to start making reservations at least 4 days in advance from your first train journey, so I wouldn't stress too much about reservation as long as you are organised.
