JR Kanto Pass for Mt Fuji and Shinkansen

Hi,

My family (5 members) will be having a 4-night short vacation to Narita/Tokyo on February 2, 2014. I am planning on getting a JR Kanto pass for all of us. Will this be enough to experience a tour via the Yamanote loop, a Mt Fuji trip and a shinkansen ride? For the shinkansen, where can we go and what can we do there (without adding more fare)?

Thanks for any information you can help for us to maximize our short vacation.

Hi Parzy,

The JR Kanto pass covers the Yamanote line, travel to Fuji and a part small part of the Shinkansen. This website provides a map and areas which you can visit with the pass.

Places you can reach by Shinkansen that may be worth a visit are [Karuizawa] and Nikko.

I hope this helps!

We'll be staying in Narita Mercure and would like to travel to Tokyo everyday for 3 days. Will I be able to use the JR Kanto pass to ride the N'EX going to and coming in from Tokyo?

Big, big help Daniel-san. Thank you very much. Last question for now: How advance should advance reservation be made for some trains like N'EX?

The N'EX is made for people just arriving at Narita Airport who generally can't make reservations hours ahead. This means that generally you can just go to the station and hop on the next train, or if it is very busy wait for the next one.

Shinkansen are a bit of a different story, on normal days they rarely sell out but can get very busy during holidays. I would recommend making seat reservation for the Shinkansen a couple of days in advance if you travel during busy periods such as New year.
