Is the rail pass worth the increase?

Hi,

My father (65) and I (28) are planning a trip to Japan for late March 2024. Our intended route is Tokyo - Mount Fuji - Kyoto - Osaka - Nara - Kobe - Hiroshima - Tokyo. We may use `Tokyo, Koyoto & Osaka as a base and make trips to the other destinations. I believe it is not possible for us to purchase the pass before the increase due to the activation period, is this correct? Considering the huge increase in the cost of the jr pass, would it be worth it for us?

Thank you for all your helpful information!

Aoife

Hi Aoife,

A 7-day JR Pass would be worth it if you do the above trip within 7-days, even at new pricing. However, it may not make sense to use a 14-day pass here, but I'd check again at the start of next year, as normal fares are set to change as well.

It is correct that we can only issue passes for use till end of this year at the old pricing.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your response! We are spending 14 days in Japan along this route. I will check again closer to the time.

Thank you,
Aoife
