Is the JR pass worth it?

Hello,

I have been using a calculator to figure out whether or not the JR pass would be worth it for our upcoming trip. We are going to Japan in mid-Oct for approximately 15 days. We arrive in Tokyo and plan to spend the first few days in Tokyo. After which we will travel to Osaka/Kyoto for a few days. Then back to Hakone. And finally back to Tokyo for the final couple of days.

I was planning on picking up the 14 day JR pass and activating it immediately because that seems to be the best value for money. But when I plug the numbers into a travel calculator it keeps saying it isn't worthwhile?

Any advice please?

Thank you

Hi there,

Your calculations are correct, for this trip plan it makes more sense to just buy normal tickets, rather than a 14-day Japan Rail Pass.

A 7-day JR Pass would have been good though, should you have done the full itinerary in 7 days :)

Happy travels,
Daniel

Thank you so much for you response! I'm a bit uncertain if our plan fits with the 7 day limit or not.

We are planning on going from Tokyo to Osaka on the 17th of Oct, and then from Kyoto to Hakone on the 23rd of Oct, and we would be aiming for the bullet trains for that. Would that fit within 7 days? I'm a bit unsure how the JR pass is timed. In my calculation both trips should be within 7 days.
