I’m planning to visit Japan again with my wife and my adult son after thirteen years. Both me & my wife are now in the late 60s. I like to know if February or March a good period to visit Japan (Tokyo)? We prefer a cooler weather with little or no snow.
Our objective is mainly to visit wards around Tokyo. Places like Shinjuku, Ginza, Ueno etc. We also plan to try the famous bullet train to Osaka and stays for 3-4 days just to enjoy the street food and ward. (1) I like to know which 7 days JR Pass should we get to go around without the hassle of popping to the ticket counters. (2) What’s the different between an ordinary & Premium? (3) Any special discount for Seniors?

Much appreciate all who can enlighten me with the info.

Hi there,

Japan is fine weather wise most of the year, except for the summer months when it gets hot and humid, but even then North Japan is fantastic with a lot of green and nature to explore. Generally speaking, March is considered one best months due to the mild weather and Sakura blossom. In Feb you still have a chance to experience snow in Tokyo.

1.) If what you are looking for is a pass where you can hop on and off the train as you go, then a normal Japan Rail Pass would be the best option. Personally, I do prefer getting seat reservations ahead of time as you are guaranteed a seat. While the chance is small, having to stand from Tokyo - Kyoto on the train is not a lot of fun. Seat reservations are free with any national Japan Rail Pass. The difference with the 1st class seats is that all seats are reserved - if you pay for 1st class - then you want to be sure that you can enjoy it.

2.) For a full breakdown, see Green Pass page. The main difference is extra comfort and quiet as you travel, overall making for a more relaxed experience.

3.) The JR Pass is already a highly discounted ticket, generally speaker, no further discounts are given (such as Student, Senior, etc).

I hope you find this useful,
Daniel
