Hi there,

We are wondering whether we should get a 7 or 14 day pass for our upcoming trip, from May 17 to 29. Arrive into Narita on Sunday 17 evening and staying in Asakusa. Would it be cheaper to only use our pass outside of Tokyo and buy any additional tickets we need (probably only one, to get back to Tokyo), therefore only needing a 7 day pass?

Here is out planned itinerary:

Day 1, 2, 3, 4 - Tokyo
Day 5 - Hakone
Day 6, 7, 8 Kyoto and surrounding sights like Himeji and Nara
Day 9, Hiroshima/Miyajima
Day 10, 11 - we want something rural/mountainous - any suggestions that can be reached on the JR Pass? Takayama?
Day 12/13 - Back to Tokyo, maybe with a stop off on the way (any suggestions depending on Day10/11?)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Hello there,

Going for a 7 day JR Pass from day 6 - 12 would be the best option for your itinerary. Local travel within Tokyo is not expansive and there's no close by JR station near Asakusa, so you will most likely use the Tokyo Metro instead.

For something rural with mountains, going to Takayama or the Japanese Alps is a great choice. Do keep in mind though that it is a long way from Hiroshima. An alternative is a visit to Matsumoto which is also located within the Japanese mountains and you could make a trip from there to the wonderful Kamikochi or visit the Kiso Valley, there are great hikes to be had there.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks for this. One question though, I am looking on Hyperdia and it seems that the NOZOMI is the only train going from Hiroshima up north - will we have to pay for this?
