Hi all,

I have the below itinerary and currently pricing up options of what pass to get. Although it seems on paper silly to get a 14 day pass considering I'm in Tokyo for the first few days, I have actually not been able to find an alternative option which makes significant savings, simply because of the days the transfers fall on.

Could anyone look over the below and advise of an alternative (if they believe there is a better one)?

This is my first trip to Japan so I am willing to pay more for convenience over lots of different passes, hence leaning towards the 14 day pass. I just had a gut feeling it is a bit strange to go for with the first 5 days in Tokyo!

1 Tokyo
2 Tokyo
3 Tokyo
4 Tokyo
5 Tokyo
6 Hakone
7 Kyoto (Day Trip to Nara & brief stop at Uji)
8 Kyoto
9 Kyoto
10 Kyoto
11 Osaka
12 Osaka
13 Hiroshima (via Himeji for a brief stop at castle)
14 Hiroshima/Back to Tokyo in evening
15 Tokyo
16 Tokyo

My current option is activate a 14 day pass on Day 1, with the final Shinkansen from Hiroshima to Tokyo neatly being on evening 14. I would also by the Hakone Free Pass as I want to do the loop with all of the different transport choices and I want to take the Romancecar. The price of this I believe is around ¥56,000 (including the Narita Express at the end)

So far I have priced up a 7 day pass activated on Day 7 so it captures the Hiroshima trip, however with the other tickets bought individually, the total is barely different (¥54,155) and would mean I'd need to buy more individual tickets.

I have also priced up individually buying all tickets, which is ¥58,195.

All help appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there,

You've done your research well so far, but note that each day is counted as a full day with the JR Pass. So activating the pass on day 7, would mean that the last day of travel is the 13th! As each day is a whole day (personally I like to count it like write it out 7-8-9-10-11-12-13). With that in mind, I would agree that a 14-day Japan Rail Pass would be the better option.

You could also make some extra money & time savings by using the Shinkansen from Tokyo - Odawara and use the Hakone Free Pass (for the Hakone circle) from there. Though the Romance car is fun too! Then add local travel within Tokyo, and any possible day trips from there, and you'll have good savings. Personally, I enjoy Nikko a lot, and you could make an easy visit to there from Tokyo.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
