My husband and I are departing for Japan on a 3-week trip and I am not sure which duration JR pass I should get for this itinerary. I am 20 days away from my departure and worried that we wouldn't get delivery of our passes in time.
March 23-29 Tokyo including 3 days in Disneyland Tokyo
March 30 -April 2 Osaka
April 2-10 -Nagano (Yamanouchi, Takayama, Obuse, Yudanaka)
April 10-11- back to Tokyo Bay

We deliver in just a few days, and I'm 100% sure we can deliver before your departure.
That said, I'm thinking Tokyo - Osaka - Nagano + Takayama day trip would be worth it to get a 7-day pass for.
The normal fares would be as follows:
Tokyo - Osaka ¥ 14,200
Osaka- Nagano ¥ 14,250
Nagano - Takayama (return) ¥ 20,660
For a total of ¥ 49,110, versus the cost of a 7-day JR Pass that is ¥ 29,650, or roughly 20.000yen in savings per person!

So are you saying that my 7 days in Tokyo, I don't need to use JR pass for going around Tokyo (Imperial Palace, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Kita and Minami districts?

Me again. I forgot to add that we will be going on a day trip with friends with JR passes also to Mt. Fuji from Tokyo on the 24th so how does that change our 7-day pass? Since we're not starting our JR pass until March 30 in Osaka is it worth it to just purchase a day pass from Tokyo to Mt. Fuji?

I forgot and I didn't see in your response the return from Nagano to Haneda Airport in Tokyo.
so really the full itinerary is:
Arrive from Haneda to our hotel in Kyobashi -March 22
March 23-30 Imperial Palace, Kita and Minami districts including Shinjuku and Shibuya, Disneyland Tokyo
March 30-April 2 Osaka
April 2 travelling from Osaka to Nagano
April 2-9 We will be staying at Yamada-onsen in Takayama but travelling within Nagano, Yamanouchi, Obuse, Takayama, Yudanaka
April 10 Nagano to Haneda Airport.
When should my 7 day pass start? my 7-day is not enough, can I purchase additional JR pass in Japan?

It does seem we're having some of your posts spread around.
To summarize:
-7-day JR Pass is the best option for your long distance travel, you can buy an additional pass if needed (but better to buy a 14-day pass ahead of time if the above plan changes).
-A visit to Mt. Fuji does not change this advice
-Travel in Tokyo is relatively low cost and day passes for the Metro or JR (within Tokyo) are usually a better option, or use a Suica card:https://www.jrpass.com/the-suica-card-and-other-ic-cards
