We 2, are visiting from the states, and would like to spend May 3 through May 9, 2016 in Hokaido, enjoying some light hiking, eating, drinking, and arts and crafts culture, gardens and perhaps museums of ethnic art. We do not plan to see everything - just enjoy what we experience. Our daughter has May 3 through 5 off from Sophia University - but must be back for class at Sophia on the morning of Friday May 6. We would like her to join us, and return alone. She has a Japan rail pass, but no pass to go North. We would like to go and return on the new Shikansen service - leaving Tokyo May 3 in the owning and returning May 9 in the evening. We understand that this is Golden week, and will be busy. What can you suggest for an itinerary?

visiting Hokaido
Hello Mitzi,
Its hard to make a full itinerary out of the blue without knowing you better. However for soon nice suggestions for what to do in Hokkaido and on the way there, have a look at this post:

Hope this helps,

Dear Daniel: Thank you for your reply. I actually made some hotel reservations that can be cancelled. I don't know if they are realistic. Can I buy 3 reserved seats on the new Shinkansen train to Hakodate? If I cannot do this, can my daughter buy these tickets? I did not see the train on the website, but I may have missed it. Thank you!
Mitzi
Hi Mitzi,
Its possible to buy tickets in Japan but not outside of Japan I am afraid, so you could ask your daughter to do this for you.
The JR Pass also covers the new Hokkaido Shinkansen.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
Thank you Daniel!
Sincerely,
Mitzi B. Sabato
