Hello. My husband and I will travel to Japan soon. Our itinerary is 5 days in Tokyo-then daytrip to Nagoya-then 2 days in Kyoto-then 2 days in Tokyo. Please confirm the 7 day JR pass is worth it. Since there is no 9 day pass, I think the 7 day pass is practical to get. Instead of using the 7 day JR pass immediately on our arrival, we plan to use it on the 3rd day of arrival up to our last day (which is the 7th day of using the JR pass). Please confirm if this is possible and if the JR pass can indeed cover our itinerary. Thank you.
Use 7day JR pass on the 3rd day of arrival in Tokyo
Hi there!
Yes, the JR Pass will be a good choice for you. Here's your basic breakdown:
- Tokyo > Nagoya: ¥10,780 (126mins, 366km)
- Nagoya > Kyoto: ¥5,640 (37mins, 147km)
- Kyoto > Tokyo: ¥13,420 (161mins, 513km)
JR ticket cost: ¥29,840 for 3 legs
- 7 day Japan Rail Pass (¥28,300) saving: ¥1,540
Note that I have not included the savings you could make from using the JR Pass around Tokyo (approx ¥500-1000/day), or included the return to the airport (¥3000).
I recommend the following combination for your trip:
- [Narita Express + Suica] or [Keisei Skyliner + Metro pass] for discounted travel into Tokyo from the airport and some inclusive metro travel. If you think you'll do a lot of travel, certainly look into buying more [2 or 1 day super-discount metro passes while you are at Narita] - the most discounted 2 day metro pass is only available at Narita and works out at ¥490/day.
- 7 day JR Pass. This will cover all your long distance travel and cover JR travel within Tokyo and the trip back to the airport.
Hope this helps!
I'm so impressed with you quick response. Thank you very much.
