I'll be two full days in Kyoto. I would like to visit:
. Higashiyama area from Sanju Sangendo Hall . Kiyomizu Temple up to Nanzenji . Philosopher's Path walk to Ginkakuji . Kinkakuji . Nijo Castle . Kitano Shrine

Can I use my JR Pass for some of these destinations? If not, I appreciate advise for a pass.

Thank you so much for helping me.

Hi Isabel,

Almost all local transports in Kyoto are run by other companies than JR, so unfortunately they are not covered by the JR-Pass. Still it is relatively cheap to get around in Kyoto. City buses will get you anywhere, most rides will only cost you 100 Yen in the city. Also an all day bus pass is available for 500Yen, which is a great deal if you plan on using the bus a lot.

Personally I think the best way to get around in Kyoto are bicycles. There are almost no mountains and you may find many great places that you would otherwise not see, there are numerous bicycle hires available at the station and in the city center.

When you are in Kyoto don't forget a visit to Gion, the old Geisha district and walk the narrow streets of Kawara Matchi for a real feel of downtown Kyoto.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much Daniel, you always help a lot!

Riding a bicycle would be nice, the problem is to find the way...
Is it easy to find people that can give directions in english?

Obrigada

Hi Isabel,

Kyoto is not hard to navigate, most big streets run parallel or vertical from each other, also most way signs display place names in English. It is normal to bicycle on the walk ways so it is very safe.

You can always bring a map and show it to someone and point where you would like to go, than people can simply point the direction you have to go. I once asked this old lady for directions and she called her husband on her cellphone, so he could explain in English how we had to go. Truly remarkable.

If you have a device with a GPS you can download mapswithme and use it while moving around. More about this in our blog post.

Let me know if I can assist in any other way :)
