Hello there:
My husband and I will be arriving Haneda airport May 21 in the evening. Will stay in Sotetsu Fresa Inn Tokyo-Kamata overnight then head to Kyoto in the morning. Will be staying in Hotel Monterey Kyoto from May 22 and check out May 27 to go to Lungwood Hotel near Nippori station & stay one night. We fly back to Los Angeles May 28 afternoon from Narita airport. Please suggest some places we can see and which train pass we can buy to maximize savings. Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi there,

In terms of a JR Pass, you could make small savings so far.
Narita Airport - Tokyo ¥ 3,020
Tokyo - Kyoto ¥ 13,600
Kyoto - Tokyo ¥ 13,600

For a total ¥ 30,220, the 7 day JR Pass is 29,100. Any additional travel would add to that. For instance if you make a couple of day trips from Kyoto and visit the surrounding places in Kansai. Think of Osaka, Kobe and Nara. You could also travel a bit further and visit Hiroshima and Miyajima.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

The way I understand your reply is, I can use the 7day JR pass to go from Tokyo to Kyoto? then I don't need to use bullet train? Places you suggested like Osaka, Kobe & Nara, can I visit them coming from Kyoto (& back) using 7day JR Pass.
Is it straight shot to these places or I will need to transfer trains.

Thank you.

Hi again,

You can use the bullet train from Tokyo - Kyoto, there are different types of bullet train services. The ones classified as Nozomi are not covered by the JR Pass but you can use the Hikari Shinkansen instead.

Travel to Osaka, Kobe and Nara are also covered by the JR Pass and can be directly accessed from Kyoto or Osaka.

The Hikari (as any Shinkansen) stops at Tokyo station, from there you can use local services such as to Yamanote line to Nippori. It's pretty close to Tokyo station.
