I am more interested to know about wheelchair accessibility for public transport in Japan. You have already advised me about Kyoto and Tokyo. I will also be visiting Hiroshima, Miyajima Island, Nara, Kobe, Kanazawa (most likely make my own way to sights if possible), Takayama, Shirakawgo for a day trip, Matsumoto, Lake Kawaguchiko, and a visit to Hakone/Mt. Fuji area on my way from Kawaguchiko to Tokyo. I can get on and off coaches and trains for long distance travel so I'm more concerned about the local public transport options. I will use a taxi if absolutely necessary. Nothing like a challenge when travelling solo in a wheelchair. Cheers Anne

Hi again,

Local travel is different in every city in Japan, while generally there are access options for wheelchair users, you may also find that there are none at times. Major stations always are equipped lifts and wheelchair friendly amminities. I do advise trying to avoid smaller stations and more remote areas, especially if you travel alone. it is best to research each place you visit in advance, in order to avoid problems later on.

There are also many travel blogs online to find about people who have traveling in Japan and just a google search will find many valuable resources.

Good luck with your travels!
Daniel
