Hi there,

I am travelling to Japan in November (total 9 days), will reach Tokyo, plan to go Mount Fuji (Kawaguchiko or Hakone) and travel to Kyoto then back to Tokyo.

  1. Correct me if I'm wrong, I understand it's easier to travel from Hakone to Kyoto, but Kawaguchiko is more recommended to go? If I'm going from Kawaguchiko to Kyoto, how do I utilize the JR pass on this route?

  2. What's the recommended transport mode to travel within Kyoto?

Thank you.

Regards,
Yvonne

Hello Yvonne,

Both Kawaguchiko and Hakone are amazing to visit. I think Kawaguchiko is somewhat more popular when it comes to viewing Fuji. Though Hakone offers more in terms of sightseeing and activities.

The advantage Hakone has, is that it has a Shinkansen station that is directly on the route between Kyoto and Tokyo. This makes for easy access. The station name is Odawara.

Going from Kawaguchiko - Kyoto basically means traveling from Kawaguchiko back to Tokyo and from there to Tokyo. The whole route takes about 5 hours and has multiple transfers. See here for an example. The JR Pass covers the route, expect for the portion between Kawaguchiko - Otsuki on the Fujikyu line. This route costs 1,140yen.

2.) Within Kyoto the most regular way of transport is by bus. These go pretty much everywhere. You can also purchase a handy bus ticket for 500yen per day that allows for unlimited travel. You can also use the JR Pass for a limited extent in Kyoto to visit Fushimi-Inari, Arashiyama and Uji.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Yes indeed this is helpful.

Looks like for the sake of time saving and convenience, Hakone is a better choice. I was checking on the route from Kyoto to Hakone, looks like there are 3 times of transfer due to the restriction of JR pass (JR Pass has no access to Nozomi). Only Nozomi Shinkansen has direct access to Hakone?

Thanks again.

Hi again!

You can't use the Nozomi but you can use the Hikari instead.

This link should give you the correct route:

Let me know if something is not clear!

Hello there,

I would like to go to Kyoto from Kawaguhicko using the JR Pass. So the best way is?

  1. From Kawaguchiko go to Odawara. ( How can I reach there?) and then take the Odawara train( HIKARI Line) direct to Kyoto. Correct?

  2. From Kawaguchiko go to Shin Yokohama. ( How can I reach there?) and then directly to Kyoto. Correct?

If there is other routes that will be closer for me being in Kawaguchiko please advise.

Delly.

Hi Delly,

Unfortenately it is not that easy to travel from Kawaguchiko - Odawara. You'd basically have to return to Tokyo station and take the Shinkansen (Hikari) from there.

Here's the full route. Coming from Kyoto.

Here's Kawaguchiko - Shin Yokohama
