Hi,
My husband and I are planning to travel in February 2019 for 5 days to Tokyo and we also want to visit Osaka and Kyoto. We haven't finalized our itinerary but we are thinking of 2 options:

Option 1 : Day 1 Arrive in Tokyo
Day 2 train to Kyoto and stay overnight Day 3 train to Osaka and stay overnight Day 4 train back to Tokyo Day 5 leave for US Option 2: Stay in Tokyo hotel from Day 1 to 5
Day 2 - do day round trips to Kyoto Day 4 - do day round trips to Osaka Is option 2 possible with bullet trains? For each option, should we get a JR pass or just get regular regional tickets (we want cheaper option) ? If we do get regular regional tickets, what line should we take ? Thanks!

Hi there,

Option 1 would be much more time efficient, Kyoto and Osaka are only 30min by train apart. While doing day trips there from Tokyo each day is about 3h-3.5h each way. It would just be a waste to spend so much time on the train when you only have 5 days to explore Japan.

Either option however is possible with the JR Pass and you would make savings in either case too.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
