School year or age based pricing?

On a lot of other sites in Japan, ie Ferry travel, it also included the school year or grade to determine price. For example, if the child is not in grade school, they are considered to be free, even though they may be 6 years old.

Does this apply to the rail pass? or is it just age based?

Thank You,

Hi there,

JR bases it's ticket pricing based on age according to the following bands (and does not consider school year):

  • 0-5: Infants - free travel
  • 6-11: Child - 50% discount on travel
  • 12+: Full fare

Hope this helps!
