Planned 30 day trip to Japan

I am planning for a 30 day maiden trip to Japan with my wife and 5 year old son. Do you offer Rail passes for more than 21 days? If so, how much? My son was born on 23 June 2013 which means he is below 6. Does that mean we do not need to buy a pass for him? He travels for free?

I would like to cover Japan as much as possible which means other than Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, we would also like to go as far as Hokkaido. Is this possible by using the rail pass? Do you have any tips for us planning a trip covering Japan as much as possible?

Thank you.

Hi there,

The maximum length of a JR Pass is 21 days but you can buy more than 1 pass if needed.

Children below the age of 6 can travel for free and 6-11 can use a child pass at half the price of an adult.

The JR Pass covers all of Japan, including Hokkaido and Kyushu. My main advice would be to get familiar with the Shinkansen network. These are the high speed bullet trains, which will get you around Japan at high speed. I also recommend visiting Kyushu, personally I find it the best part of Japan. The cities of Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto and Kagoshima are all amazing and it is an easy trip down once you are in Hiroshima.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
