Hi Daniel san,

I just wanted to get your opinion on buying a JR pass vs using the local trains.

Our itineray is as follows:

Day 1: Arrive at Narita Airport. Will need to get to Yokohama
Day 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Tokyo
Day 4: Tokyo - leave for Osaka
Day 5: Osaka
Day 6: Osaka
Day 7: Osaka
Day 8: Osaka leave for Tokyo. Going to Disneyland
Day 9: Tokyo
Day 10: Tokyo
Day 11: Tokyo - fly home from Narita Airport

Something to note is that we want to go to Nara as a day trip too.

Would you recommend a 7 day JR pass? Will that be enough? Or just local trains?

Thanks so much

Hi there,

A 7 day Japan Rail Pass would work well for your travel plan. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is similar to the cost of a return ticket Tokyo <-> Osaka using the Shinkansen bullet trains. Now you get 7 days of unlimited travel and any additional travel you do is basically free. Think of a visit to Nara, local travel on any JR line and travel back to Narita Airport.

With your return in mind, I would suggest activating the JR Pass on day 4, so it also covers the return back to Narita Airport.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
