Hi Audrey,
A 7-day JR Pass is worth considering here, the cost of a 7-day pass is similar in price to a return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka, from there any additional travel, is basically what you'd save. This could be travel on local JR lines, to/from the airport or maybe even an extra day trip.
