Greetings everyone,

I’m Bije from Indonesia. I’d like to ask for advice regarding my plan to visit Japan in January–February 2025. However, I’m still confused about which transportation option is the best and most cost-effective, especially considering the significant price increase of the JR Pass.

I will be traveling with my wife and my 1.5-year-old child. We will arrive at Haneda on January 28, 2025, and return to Indonesia from Haneda on February 5, 2025. I plan to visit Osaka, Kyoto, Fuji, and Tokyo, with the following detailed itinerary:

Itinerary – Japan Trip 2025

January 28, 2025
• Direct to Osaka. January 29, 2025
• Osaka sightseeing (Osaka Castle, Kuromon, Dotonbori). • Transport: Public transportation. January 30, 2025
• Shinkansen to Kyoto. • Kyoto sightseeing (Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kiyomizudera, Gion). • Hotel check-in. • Transport: Public transportation. January 31, 2025
• Kyoto to Shirakawago. • Explore Shirakawago. • Shirakawago to Takayama. • Hotel check-in. • Transport: Private bus. February 1, 2025
• Explore Takayama Old Town. • Takayama to Tokyo. • Hotel check-in. • Transport: Private bus. February 2, 2025
• Tokyo sightseeing (Harajuku, Shibuya, Asakusa). • Transport: Public transportation. February 3, 2025
• Tokyo sightseeing (Tsukiji Fish Market, Akihabara). • Free time. • Transport: Public transportation. February 4, 2025
• Tokyo Disneyland. February 5, 2025
• Heading back to Indonesia.

With this itinerary, which option should I choose?
• JR Pass Nationwide 7 days • Hokuriku Arch Pass 7 days • Single tickets for each trip, and buy Osaka Day Pass, Kyoto Day Pass, and Tokyo Day Pass

I’d really appreciate the advice of anyone familiar with this, as I’ve been quite stressed about deciding which option is the best and most budget-friendly.

Thank you very much!

Hi there,

Travel to Takayama and Shirakawa-go would not be covered by the Hokuriku Arch Pass, and even though travel to Takayama would be covered with a regular 7-day JR Pass, it's price is too high to justify purchasing it for your itinerary if you're seeking the most cost-effective option. I'd therefore recommend purchasing your tickets individually.

Kind regards,

Alexis
