Hi there,
I'd suggest activating it as soon as you land in Japan and then setting the activation date for the day you intend to begin using it, as you can then begin making reservations from that point on increasing your likelihood that you'll find seats on the trains you plan on taking (e.g. a Shinkansen train during a busy period in Japan !).
