Value if Only in Tokyo & Kyoto?

Will be in Tokyo for one week and Kyoto for one week. Since our focus of will be these two cities and no extended day trips outside of these 2 cities, is there value in purchasing the JR Rail Pass or should we simply purchase the train tickets for each route individually? (We will be using a lot of local city transportation with these two cities.).

Price comparison: JR Rail Pass for 2 people for 14 days: $1,104 and Train Tickets from Tokyo to Kyoto to Tokyo for 2 people: $584.

Thank you for your input.

Hi there,

There isn’t much value in purchasing the JR Pass in your instance. It’s very much designed for inter-city (as opposed to intra-city) travel and so I’d recommend purchasing your tickets individually. I would recommend looking into a SUICA ;or equivalent) travel card, if you plan on making use of public transport a lot.

Hope this helps!

Alexis
