We are coming to Japan in May for two weeks and will be travelling between Tokyo to Hiroshima and back to Tokyo. When we are in the big cities however, are we likely to use the JR pass much or would we be using the subway or metro trains more? cheers, Vanessa
Using JR Pass in the main cities in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima)
Hi there,
Inside cities you won't be making much use of the JR Pass - in Osaka and Tokyo, the JR Pass will cover the Osaka Loop line and JR Yamanote Loop Line respectively, offering basic metro travel, but aside from that it won't provide much help for most bus and metro services as they are mostly privately owned. I would only suggest purchasing it if you plan to make several trips to cities using the Shinkansen - e.g for an itinerary of Tokyo, Osaka and Hiroshima, it may work quite well as the Shinkansen tickets are the most expensive form of train travel. It also gives the option for day trips out of these cities, such as to Miyajima island from Hiroshima (Ferry covered by JR Pass) or Nara/Kyoto from Osaka.
Hope this helps!
Alexis
