Travelling Tokyo - Hakuba - Kyoto

Hello,

Apologies if this question has been asked already, I am SO new to trying to understand how the JR pass works and I need some help!
In December we (2 people) are travelling from Tokyo - Hakuba and then Hakuba to Kyoto. From Kyoto we are going to Hiroshima and then back to Osaka.

My main question is relating to Tokyo to Hakuba:
Does my JR pass cover travel from Tokyo to Nagano station? When I look online it is asking about reserved seats and pricing and I don't understand if I am meant to pay more on top of the JR Pass?
Do we need to pre book this journey?

Next question is does the JR pass cover travel from Hakuba to Kyoto (what is the best way) and then Kyoto to Hiroshima and Hiroshima to Osaka.

Thanks!

Hi there,

The JR Pass covers travel to Nagano but you can even take a direct train (the Azusa) from Shinjuku station in Tokyo to Hakuba. Travel to Kyoto, Hiroshima and Osaka would also be covered without any addition cost.

Going from Hakuba to Kyoto is not a straight forward trip and has some transfers. The best way would look like this see route 3. Where you use ltd. express trains to Nagoya and the Shinkansen from there to Kyoto.

Seat reservations are recommended, especially if you travel around new year.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel!

Just to confirm the ltd. express trains are different lines which are not covered by the JR pass?

No, limited express trains are high-speed trains but not the bullet trains.

The JR Pass covers these (as long as they are on JR lines).
