Hello,

I'm new to the forums and I just bought my Japan Rail Pass recently.
I'm travelling to Japan on May 25 to June 1, alone to visit my friends and have fun in the game center.

Two of my friends live in Osaka and Miyagi(Sendai), one on May 26 and the other on May 29.
However, I am still confused with the Shinkansen. Is it free on Osaka and Miyagi?

I also wanted to get a Japan SIM card/wireless device. Any recommendations? I am arriving on Haneda Airport and using iPhone 5.

Does anyone know any iPhone application that allows us to check the schedule of the trains? Thank you!

Hi there!

You can reach both Osaka and Miyagi for free with the JR Pass! So no worries there :)

About Simcard rentals in Japan: We have a great blog spot about it with some option. Personally I also love the service from B-mobile that allows you to buy a 3g data sim card.
You can find more about it here.

You can also download the iPhone application from Hyperdia if you wish to check travel times on the go. More about that here.

Hope this helps :)
Daniel

Hello, thank you for the quick reply!

I heard that JRPass only allows us to travel using only Hikari and Kodama trains as seen here http://www.jrpass.com/images/Japan_Rail_Pass.pdf (page 6). I bought a 7 day pass ( non-first class).

If I want to take to Miyagi, I have to take JR Tohoku Shinkansen.

Thank you!

Hi there,

I see that you have been reading up on the usage and the ''No Nozomi'' part makes for some confusion.
Don't worry though, the JR Pass can get you too all places that the Nozomi stops too, with the Hikari and Kodama trains.

All Shinkansen north of Tokyo (Tohoku) region are covered by the JR Pass so no worries there! If you can, ride the new Super Komachi train to Sendai, this train was just put in service this March and is a great ride!

Let me know if you have any other questions,
Daniel

Hello, thanks for the quick reply!

Does that mean that I can take all Shinkansen trains in japan except for Nozomi?

Hi Again,

Almost the JR Pass covers all train on the JR Network exept for the Nozomi and Mizuhou (Kyushu) Shinkansen.
All other Shinkansen and trains from JR are covered. In some local places you may also find privately owned railway companies that don't accept the JR Pass but looking you should not need to use them judging from your itinerary.

Also see our great interactive map that shows you all places, and lines covered.

Best regards,
Daniel
