Hi, I will be travelling, and I wanted to know:
1) the cost of the various tickets and if it would be cheaper to have a rail pass?
2) if I have a rail pass, should I get a 7 day or 14 day? If a 7 day, when do I have the best value with using it?
3) What is the best way to get from Tokyo to Iberaki, and how long does it take?

Two of us come in on separate flights, and will travel together for the rest of the time.

Day 1 Sept 26th - TOKYO from airports (1 from Narita 3:30 PM, 1 from Ibaraki at 12:20 PM)
Sept 27 - TOKYO-
Day 3 Sept 28 - MT FUJI/LAKE- (Hakone area)
Day 4 Sept 29 - KYOTO
Sept 30 - KYOTO
Oct 1 - KYOTO
Day 7 Oct 2 - OSAKA
Day 8 Oct 3  TOKYO
Day 9 Oct 4 - TOKYO go to airport (Ibaraki by 11:00 AM)

I appreciate your help.

Hi there!

I think that a 7 day JR Pass would be the best option for your plans! You could best use it from day 3-9 to cover all Shinkansen travel between Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka and back to Tokyo. A single return Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka is roughly the same price as a return by Shinkansen, and any travel you may do after is actually free!

As for travel to Ibaraki Airport [have you read this access guide]?
The best way to travel there is to take the [bus from Tokyo Airport] which takes 500yen / 1h40min.

I hope this helps!

Yes, your answers helped. now I have a few other questions for some more help please.

1) Where do I find the train schedules, and how do I make my reservations? I will order my pass tomorrow.

2) Is smoking allowed on the trains?

3) Is the green pass the same as first class?

4) Since this is a week of a China National holiday, do you expect it to be busy season (and I need a first class pass) or is the green pass OK?

Hi again!

1.) For train schedules and other route information, be sure to check out Hyperdia.com which has all the information you may need. Do note that it can be sometimes confusion due to the fact that there may be little too much information. To get you started read our guide on Planning with Hyperdia. You can make train reservation the moment that you are in Japan and have activated your JR Pass.

2.) Smoking is no longer allowed inside the train, however most Shinkansen come equipped with a special smoking room which you can use to enjoy a sig during your train travels.

3.) Yes Green Class is the equivalent of 1st Class in other countries, do note Green Class will still impress you, even if you are used to 1st class travel in Europe or other parts of the world.

4.) You may see a couple more Chinese visiting Japan during Chinese holidays but this won't make a big difference in how busy trains are going to be.

I hope this helps too!
Daniel
